Dinosaur project in 3rd grade

Dinosaur project Oddný/Edda

This winter, 3rd grade students completed a dinosaur-themed project that brought together four subjects: Icelandic, natural science, mathematics, and information literacy.

The class used the book "Risaeðlutíminn” (Dinosaur Era) by Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir along with various other educational books about dinosaurs. In Icelandic class, students focused on different types of writing, starting by creating an illustrated, expository book. Next came creative writing, where they described their own imagined dinosaurs. Here, imagination took the lead, and the creatures' appearance and abilities didn't need to be based in reality. The children also researched a specific dinosaur species and wrote an informational text. They then created a massive mural, drawing the dinosaurs they wrote about at a 1:16 scale. The class also watched a dinosaur egg hatch, recording its daily progress with text and photos before compiling their report into an e-book. The students had outdoor lessons to visualize the dinosaurs' true scale, comparing their dimensions to various things in their surroundings, such as the height of multi-family residences, fire hydrants, and the length of buses. These comparisons were then made into posters.

The highlight was presenting the project to close family members. Attendance for the event was excellent, and students had no trouble presenting their texts to nearly 100 people. Despite their young age, they didn't let the crowd intimidate them, stood confidently on stage and delivered their presentations well.
