The school

Hamraskóli started its operations in the fall of 1991 and now has about 225 students in grades 1 to 7. The school is a health-promoting school, and emphasis is placed on movement, joy, and the activity of students. The school puts considerable emphasis on fostering a friendly school community and encouraging positive and good interaction among students and staff.

The school operates under a growth mindset, teaching students how to face challenges and view mistakes as opportunities to learn. Formative learning is a thread through the education of the students and should be reflected in all subjects, theoretical, and practical. The school operates a special division for autism, meant for children with an autism diagnosis. The school's future vision is to enhance formative learning within the school and to encourage students and staff to adopt a growth mindset. The school's motto is kindness, responsibility, and consideration.

Simbað After-School Program is for children in 1st to 4th grade at Hamraskóli, and Fjörgyn Youth Center offers a variety of fun activities for children and adolescents.

School rules

The national curriculum for primary schools states that students need to develop various skills in daily life to be active participants in a democratic society, including communication skills, respect, tolerance, and understanding of democratic society structure. Students must learn to interact harmoniously with each other and all school staff, take responsibility for their own conduct and behavior, and respect school rules.

Hamraskóli aims to keep school rules clear and simple.

School rules are divided into two categories: rule matrix and general school rules.

UNICEF Rights Respecting School

Rights respecting schools and after-school programs are dedicated to one of the fundamental principles of Icelandic education: democracy and human rights. The program emphasizes children's rights education for both children and adults, ensuring that children become active participants in a democratic society. To put the Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice, each Rights Respecting School develops an action plan. Action plan for Hamraskóli.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child.

Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with parents and enhance their involvement in schooling.

All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

Primary school meals

School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

Parents/guardians register for the school lunch program in the Skólamatur system and select which weekdays their children will eat. Students must choose the same weekdays each week, such as all Tuesdays and/or all Thursdays. Find more information on the Skólamatur website.

Assessment of school operations

The goal of assessing and monitoring quality is to provide insight into schooling, its outcomes, and its development.

Hamraskóli school district

Reykjavík has many school districts, and the child's registered address determines their district school.

Your child gets priority in their district school. Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school districts, applications, and admission.

Here is information on which streets belong to Hamraskóli's school district.
